Curious food #7: Oh So Exciting Candy!

21 Oct

Since Hallowe’en candy is being featured prominently in grocery stores right now and sugar is on our minds, I thought I might feature some of the candy from my Cabinet of Food Curiosities.

A few years ago I found “Super-Lemon Candy” at a local Asian food mart, and was attracted by the “It’s So Wonderful Candy” claim and the innocent but slightly crazed looking girl on the package front.

The back of the package shows the girl about to eat the candy, and then another drawing of her with an exploding mouth exclaiming “Oh! Super Candy” after eating it.  Although her eyes seem to indicate that maybe she’s just not that into it.

Then a little while later I found a new improved package of the same candy, now called  “Super Lemon”, with a more mature Roy Lichtenstein-esque blond vamp on the front exclaiming “OH! New Taste”. BTW, there’s a retrospective exhibit of Roy Lichtenstein’s work on right now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC if you’re in that part of the world.

The back of the package shows the same woman about to eat the candy, and then exclaiming, as on the front of the package, “OH! New Taste”, with the exploding mouth thing going on again. Also included in the new packaging is a cross-section of the candy showing the “Lemon Taste Powder” outer shell, the “Mild Lemon Candy” middle layer, and finally the “Super Lemon Candy” core.  Oh so exciting!

Another exciting candy find was made on a trip we took to Newfoundland in 2006: Purity “Climax Mixture” (some kind of an oxymoron going on there). This candy and many other Purity offerings were in almost every store we walked into. Purity Factories Ltd. is a food company founded in St. John’s Newfoundland in 1924 and it’s still going strong. Here’s a slightly blurry 1986 TV ad for Purity:

Watch for more curious candy from the cabinet next week!

Sort of. See tomorrow’s post and other upcoming ones. There seems to be a lot of weird candy in my cabinet.
